The military is an essential part of the Colorado
Springs local economy. The Air Force Academy, Fort Carson Army Base,
Peterson Air Force Base, Schriever Air Force Base, Northern Command and
NORAD, are all key installations and a vibrant part of our community,
and we salute the members of the Armed Forces who are stationed here.
House values are not falling like they are in many cities. According to
recent numbers from the National Association of Realtors, Colorado
Springs continues to experience significant home value gains.
According to the Department of Labor, the 2007 population of Colorado
Springs MSA was estimated at 609,096. This represents a 20.3 percent
increase from 1997.
The total civilian labor force in Colorado Springs MSA for August
2008 was 317,456, of which 298,277 were employed and 19,179 were
unemployed. The unemployment rate was 6.0 percent.

Fort Carson has an
additional brigade combat team. Fort Carson gained 4,178 military and
199 civilian workers with the brigade combat team and a unit of
employment headquarters transferred from Fort Hood, TX. The sum total
of all personnel gains, expected to total over $8,000, has had a very
positive impact on the local economy and housing market of Colorado
Springs.
There also may be additions to Peterson and Schriever air force bases.
The local paper reported that Rep. Doug
Lamborn is seeking $63.3 million in special-project funding in the 2009
budget. All is defenserelated.
Lamborn wants $14.9 million for Peterson Air
Force Base projects, $10 million for Schriever Air Force Base and
$37.75 million for projects under development by defense contractors.
Another $687,000 would be spent on Highway 115 access to Fort Carson.
